Anxiety and Stress

While some level of anxiety is normal and can even be helpful in some situations, when anxiety is persistent it can become debilitating and interfere with daily activities, relationships, and overall quality of life .

Anxiety is characterised by excessive worry, fear, and apprehension about future events or situation, as well as physical symptoms including difficulty breathing, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, light headedness and tingling or numbness.

There are several types of anxiety disorders, including generalised anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder and phobias, among others.

Together, we will work to manage your symptoms, develop coping mechanisms, and identify the root cause of your anxiety. The therapy can involve practicing mental and physical relaxation, and sometimes this is sufficient to help a person cope with the anxiety symptoms.

Another effective treatment for anxiety is exposure therapy. This therapy involves gradual exposure to the source of the anxiety in a safe and controlled environment. For example, someone with a fear of flying might start by looking at pictures of airplanes, then progress to watching take-off’s and landings, and eventually take a short flight. Through repeated exposure, the person learns to manage their anxiety and gradually overcome their fear.

Sometimes, anxiety can be the result of traumatic experiences or ongoing stressors in a person’s life, which the therapy can identify and address.
